But why 'fourforty'?

Well..., Concert 'A' is the universal standard pitch for tuning.

When you hear an orchestra tuning prior to a performance, each individual instrument takes it's tuning pitch from the principal oboe, due to it's pure tonal quality, sounding a concert A - which resonates at a rate of 440 hertz, or cycles, per second.

Setting a clear benchmark from which others take their lead.
